Interior architects i29 designed a 150 sq m apartment for a family of four in a stately building in southern Amsterdam. The original dwelling, which had rooms for staff, a double hall and long hallways with lots of doors, has been transformed into a spacious, transparent home full of light and air. The project’s centrepiece is a custom-made kitchen structure featuring floor-to-ceiling cabinets, spray-painted white, with laser-cut openings that also act as handles. An atrium with an open-tread staircase brings natural light from a large rooflight into the living area. Along the staircase, a two-storey wall covered with natural pine connects the two levels. Upstairs the master bedroom is situated next to a large bathroom with a finish of tiles, glass and wooden timber.
