Chiswick House Garden
An architect-designed two-storey house by Michaelis Boyd needed a bold design in the garden that would hold its own against the strong lines of the property. The challenge for Chiswick garden designer Ruth Willmott Associates was to harmonise a plot that runs parallel to a road and crosses all the back gardens of multiple properties – all with varied boundary treatments. Another challenge is a property that is built one floor below ground and one floor above with a lawn that slopes upwards away from the house. Solutions included a shady courtyard for the lower level, dramatic 4m wide steps leading to the upper lawn and cherry trees to screen the boundaries.
