The Kench

Part of a development of seafront chalets on Hampshire’s Hayling Island, The Kench is the work of the house’s owner, John Young, and Charles Meloy of Meloy Architects. In response to severe flood risk, the chalet ‘floats’ above ground level, with access via a ramp. An open-plan living area and kitchen gives out on to a generous desk, separated by a floor-to-ceiling glazed wall that can be folded back. This project was shortlisted for the 2014 RIBA Manser Medal.
