Make Yourself Comfortable at Chatsworth House
Chatsworth is one of Europe’s greatest stately homes, a 300-year-old baroque masterpiece owned by the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire and filled with one of the greatest historical art collections in private hands. However this is not a historic relic but a thriving home, and for their big 2015 exhibition the Duke and Duchess, along with Hannah Obee, the Curator of Exhibitions and Special Projects, decided to showcase some of the top furniture designers in the world at the moment as well as up and coming talent. Big names such as Marc Newson and Thomas Heatherwick offered iconic pieces like the Lockheed Lounge and Spun, while specially commissioned works like Tome Price’s Counterpart. The range of work on offer – some 80 pieces – is breathtaking, but what is even more stimulating is how well they sit in their grand locations, reminding us that all furniture was at one point contemporary, and that good design never rests on its laurels.
