Hummelo - Romina Osuna Tunks

Jun 20 2016

If Piet Oudolf is one of the most influential garden designers and plantsmen of the 21st century, then his famous garden at his house near Hummelo is the shrine to Oudolf’s ‘New Perennial’ movement – thousands of gardeners visit every year, seeking inspiration. The garden as it stands today is divided loosely into sections, with an approach half-obscured by hedges, creating a sense of anticipation. The borders are filled with perennials and grasses, and in the… Read more

Söderöra Summerhouse - Romina Osuna Tunks

Jul 20 2015

Situated on a remote island in the Stockholm Archipelago with no infrastructure, great care had to be taken with the choice of materials used to build this small house. Four small rooms are placed around a large central space, with a large skylight and glazed niches opening the building towards the sky and offering 360° views. In two of the niches, sliding glass doors create sheltered spaces for the entrance terrace and a place for… Read more

Broad Street House - Romina Osuna Tunks

Mar 10 2016

This exceptional new build Suffolk home by Nash Baker Architects, reflects local vernacular tradition whilst at the same time being unashamedly modern. Replacing a pre-existing 1980s building, the property blends with the architectural character of the village by using locally sourced materials. To create a distinctive look, the bricks are laid in a variation of ‘Monks bond’ with white iron-free sand for the lime mortar. In contrast to the brickwork on the ground floor, the upper… Read more

House in Somerset - Mario Scotto

Oct 8 2014

Located within the Cotswold Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Somerset, the site was formerly a group of stone farm buildings on the north facing slope of a rural valley.  The brief called for a large contemporary country house that would take advantage of the extensive open views as well as provide a southern aspect and the resultant sunny aspect. Seth Stein Architects lived up to the task. As keen environmentalists, the client required that the… Read more

Red Bridge House - Mario Scotto

Sep 2 2014

Smerin Architects build a family house on three floors with an indoor swimming pool and generous covered terrace, set in an area of ancient woodland on the edge of Ashdown Forest in East Sussex. Although clearly contemporary in the palette of materials and pared back aesthetic used, the house also recalls the honest quality of the agricultural buildings around.

Jul 15 2015

The Treehotel is situated in stunning forests and overlooking the wild Lule River in northern Sweden, where people can enjoy nature amongst the tree-tops while also having a unique design experience. Tham & Videgård were invited to provide one of six tree houses, and they created an extraordinary mirrored cube, meaning the building both reflects and is almost subsumed by nature. Although traditional from the outside, its interiors combine local materials such as timber and stone with contemporary, clean-lined furniture to come up with a fresh look. Reclaimed timber panelling on the walls and ceilings adds warmth and texture and rustic irregularity that contrasts with the smooth glass, metal and marble surfaces. Photography: Design… Read more
