Mediterranean Retreat - Romina Osuna Tunks

Aug 17 2016

JUMA Architects were asked to create a serene holiday retreat on a Mediterranean hillside, characterised by pine forest. Taking a leaf from the Japanese ethos, the architects kept as many trees as possible, for shade and for a natural feel. This is accented by the use of white plaster and natural stone in the interior. Arranged in an L-shape orientated towards the spectacular view, the first floor accommodates the bedrooms, which have large windows featuring… Read more

House in Tinos - Mario Scotto

Feb 17 2015

For this project on the small Cycladean island of Tinos, Zoumboulakis Architects has combined surprisingly industrial materials such as glass and steel with the more traditional building techniques of the area, including large stone walls, stone lintels and wooden shutters. This theme extends inside, with cooling concrete floors, built-in furniture and a highly sculptural metal staircase and cantilevered table/bar, also in rusted metal. The minimal interiors are dotted with contemporary furniture, to complement the owners’… Read more

The Dune House - Romina Osuna Tunks

Jul 7 2015

The Dune House by Jarmund/Vigsnaes Arkitekter (JVA) unsurprisingly sits right on the beach near Thorpeness in Suffolk. Commissioned by the visionary holiday home company Living Architecture, it’s the first UK property from JVA, who are renowned for their creative responses to the awe-inspiring coastline in Norway. In The Dune House JVA – who worked with the renowned Mole Architects – have combined a distinctly Nordic outside-in aesthetic mixed with English vernacular, particularly the gabled roof, which… Read more

Petter Dass Museum - Romina Osuna Tunks

Jul 15 2015

When creating the Petter Dass Museum in Alstahaug, Norway, Snøhetta faced two problems: how to honour the poet and writer who holds such a legendary position in Nordic psyche, and how to place a contemporary building in a site of extreme historical importance. They got round the latter by placing the building in a cutting, slightly hidden from Dass’s church by a band of trees, and used the granite of the cutting’s sides as a… Read more

Villa Röling - Mario Scotto

Mar 2 2015

Designed for clients who are passionate art collectors, Villa Röling’s aim is to do justice to its owners’ collection of paintings and sculptures. Architects Paul de Ruiter didn’t want to compromise of the views of lake Westeinderplas (in the central Netherlands) either, however, and so created a home of contrasts – a transparent glass volume overlooking the lake and the garden, with a wooden box on top for the works of art. The overhanging top… Read more

Mazzini 31 - Mario Scotto

May 8 2015

Located in the Umbrian town of Monteleone D’Orvieto, Mazzini 31 was restored by Chicago-based architect Patrizio Fradiani of Studio F, and his partner Mark – the pair are serial renovators and run Luci di Casa, renting out their vacation properties in Italy and Mexico. This medieval palazzo was brought back to life by uncovering and restoring original features, including layers of wall and ceiling frescoes dating back several hundred years – then adding layers of… Read more

Residence in Hydra - Mario Scotto

Feb 17 2015

The simple shelter of Zoumboulakis family on the island of Hydra is full of little surprises with first and foremost the excellent sunset views. The vacation house designed by architect Theodore Zoumboulakis constitutes an interesting combination of traditional and contemporary elements. The residence is built on the beach of the quiet Vlychos village by handsomely, basic materials such as exposed concrete, cement and stone.  The house consists of two volumes – one white and one… Read more

Sussex Coastal Renovation - Mario Scotto

Jan 13 2015

The extensive renovation of a former care home allowed Tillman Domotics to work closely with the client to customise the Sussex coastal property exactly for his needs. There’s no aspect of integrated technology that this property does not include from access control, intercom and video-entry systems, intruder and fire alarms to telephone, data and TV distribution. One of the highlights here is a custom-made home cinema with a 3-metre wide micro-porous projection screen, active 3-D… Read more

The Kench - Mario Scotto

Nov 4 2014

Part of a development of seafront chalets on Hampshire’s Hayling Island, The Kench is the work of the house’s owner, John Young, and Charles Meloy of Meloy Architects. In response to severe flood risk, the chalet ‘floats’ above ground level, with access via a ramp. An open-plan living area and kitchen gives out on to a generous desk, separated by a floor-to-ceiling glazed wall that can be folded back. This project was shortlisted for the… Read more
