Opened in 1995 at the headquarters of the famous manufactured gem company, Swarovski Kristallwelten (Swarovski Crystal Worlds) has become one of Austria’s most popular tourist attractions. Along with CAO PERROT and s_o_s architekten, Snøhetta was invited to create new buildings as part of the company’s 120 anniversary expansion in April 2015. Snøhetta contributed a playtower and playground, a shop entrance and a café and restaurant area. The 20m tall playtower features four play areas on vertically arranged flower, including a 14m high climbing net and trampoline on the top floor. The exterior features 160 crystal facets, each unique, that are printed with Swarovski logos. At night the tower is lit up and reflected in the Mirror Pool. The outdoor playground features free-form shapes to encourage imaginative play. The Café is a more organic structure with brushed white concrete framing views of the countryside, and studded with Swarovski’s trademark crystals. Last but by no means least, the shop entrance is actually a tunnel which also exists as a light and sound installation wherein glowing fibres form a spiral drawing visitors inside.
